Chapter 1
Helena
My name is Helena. I am unsure how to explain myself. In the story books I read, the protagonist tells the reader where they are from, their back story, and often sets the scene. I suppose I shall start there. I live with my older brother, our mother ran away years ago and we never met our father. The village we live in consists of four types of people: the children, the Keepers the scientists, and the leaders. The children gather food. The leaders hunt for food and protect us.The Keepers make sure everything goes smoothly. The scientist are the most important. They are the ones trying to cure us of the affliction that ties us together. The affliction that has sent us into exile in the most desolate mountains and, for those who have given up hope, underground. I prefer to avoid mirrors, but brother tells me that the disease hasn't tarnished my appearance as it has others. My hair is a mixture of red and dark brown. I am told my eyes are unusually pale blue with -as I'm told- grey flecks. My skin though, has suffered damage, as I have sores on my arms, and legs, and even on my face, though sores are just an affect of the disease. Some of us lose limbs or mass amounts of our skin and many "normals" call us things of myth. They call us Zombies. But in truth we aren't zombies. It was during the third world war.The Russians and Americans were in the midst of the highpoint of war when things turned from possibly nuclear warfare to something much worse. Biological warfare. Nobody knows if it was the Americans or the Russians who did it, but soon Necrotizing fasciitis -or flesh eating diesease- spread rapidly. No one was ready for it and soon, millions were dying. This disease was attacking people by the thousands so rapidly that medicine wasn't being produced quickly enough, resulting in the death of many. The United Nations called for the stop of selling the mediction until there was enough for everyone and many kept dying, until one daythe medication was delivered to every one, and every one got better... Until a second wave of Necrotizing fasciitis came and this time it had mutated, becoming something much worse and unknown to the world. They exiled the infected. Away from the "Normals", the unaffected. It was thought the disease would die out, but then it was learned that it hereditary. This disease wasn't Necrotizing fasciitis, it hadn't been so for years. It was now only known as the Zombie disease. The scientists run tests, trykng to find a cure, but they can't do it without human samples and such, so Leaders go out and hunt for not just food, but people to test. Sometimes Normals send the outcasts out into the forest, where they are sacrificed to us. Normals have a belief that if they give people to test, we will leave the rest alone. This is -to an extent- true.
I am anti-human testings because this isn't right. How can we sacrifice others to get what we want when they themselves have not wronged us. But, as a Keeper, I must make sure the Normals are kept in their cells and well fed. Some Keepers are curel to the Normals, and it disgusts me. But, how much will I take before I am pushed too far and am forced to take desperate measures?
I don't know. I hope I will never have to find out.
"Helena, the Leaders near. They found some Normals," brother tells me as he wraps a fresh bandage on his arm. He fixes his lab coat and hugs me before leaving to his lab. He is one of our leading scientists, just under Dr. Glifford.
I peer out our front window, and sure enough, there is a group of Leaders walking towards the gates that surround our village. Tied at their wrists was two Nornals, a boy and girl, being led by a Leader.
I pull my hair back into a ponytail and slip a coat on before going out to meet them. It would be my job to take the Normals to their cells.
"Hey Helena, right on time!" Called Dustin, who was at the front of the group. He was tall and lean with brown eyes and blonde hair. Sores covered his body and he wore a bandages on his arms and leg. He was considerably handsome for being a Zombie and he knew it. It was rather annoying actually.
"Hello Dustin. I will take them from here," I said.
"I think a Leader should go with you. These ones got a lot if fight in them," he said.
"Very well, let the one leading them come with me," I said, indicating the boy with golden eyes, and reddish brown hair. I nodded my head at him.
"What's your name?" I asked.
"Sean," he replied.
"Help me take the Normals to their cell than, Sean." I started walking off to the cells, Sean and the Normals followed behind. Many residents stopped to peer as we passed by.
"You are new here, yes?" I asked Sean, I have never seen him around the village. Was he a nomad? Or was he a new zombie?
"Yes," he said, he voice sounded as though his throat had gone dry. I nodded as we approached the tall stone building. It had three stories, 150 cells, and 1,400 inmates. It also included three labs and an employee break room.
I took out my card and slipped it into the designated hole in the door. A light turned from red to green and the door unlocked itself. I opened it for the others as they walked in before closing it and directing them to the main room, where the head of security would assign the two Norms their cell.
The boy glared at me as I walked by and the girl just hung her head. She was so small and fragile looking. My frown softened.
"Two more Norms," I said to Sven, the head or security. He nodded.
"Keep doing all this good work, the Elders just might fire me and promote you my job," he smiled as he looked through papers and scribbled somethings down.
"Well, hopefully they don't do it any time soon," I said with a small smile, "I don't want too much responsibilty."
"Psh, we all know you'd haveto die first before you stop taking care of these Norms. You care way too much to give up on them," Sven laughed heartily. I blushed and snuck a look at Sean who had a small smile on his face.
"New boy even finds your soft spot for 'em hilarious!" Sven said.
"Yeah, yeah. Just tell me what cells they go to," I said before Sean could reply. I wasn't in the mood to hear how much of a freak I am for caring about Norms.
It was a common belief that Norms deserved to be tested on. It was after all, they were the ones who outcasted us and sent us away. I suppose many thought of this as a way of getting paybacks for giving us this sickness, though it wasn't every Norms fault.
Anyways, I didn't share that bias and for it, I am treated as a joke. It must be a side affect ofthe disease to lust for revenge even though it may be taken out upon the wrong people. I suppose this was a side affect of the disease I didn't recieve. Thankfully.
I thank Sean for taking them here, but tell him he may go now. He insists on coming along anyways, so I allow him.
We drop the boy off in cell fifteen, which is for solitary confinement and the girl to cell eight, where she bunks with another girl. They appear to be near the same age.
I ask the girl if she wants anything else, but she just ignores me. I ask the other girl and she just asks for some paper. I smile and go get some, when I return, I give it to her and she takes out a pen. She begins drawing and quickly thanks me for the paper. I nod and lead Sean out of the cell and he walks me home. My shift in the cells doesn't start for a few hours.
